How To Obtain A Building Permit

   In our last blog post we talked about why building permits are important to have. In this post, we’re going to walk you through the steps on how to obtain a building permit for your architectural project.

Talk to a Code official

     The first thing you need to do is talk to your city’s code official. They will answer any questions you may have and help you avoid wasting time and money. Your code official will be able to provide enough information and resources to make sure you are building your project in compliance with your city’s building codes.

Application

    You got the application from the city and now it’s time to fill it out! When filling out your permit application you will put down all the details for your project. Once you have the application completely filled out, you will submit it to the city with any drawings, plans, or sketches showing the where, when, and how of your project.

Review

    The city or code official will go over the plans and drawings to make sure they meet all the requirements needed. If you’re up to code you will receive your permit. If you happen to not meet all the requirements, your city’s code official will help you get your project on track to becoming compliant.

  Get Permit

     Yay! You got your permit! You can now legally start construction. When you get your permit there will be a fee to cover the cost of construction, review, inspection process, and application. Something to know, there are usually different permits for electrical, plumbing, heating, and air. Be sure to ask your code official if you need these permits as well. There should always be someone to help you with any questions you may have.
